The Birmingham Six have been paid undisclosed damages by a former Conservative MP for libel. Mr David Evans, who lost his seat in the last general election, claimed last year that the six men were guilty of the 1975 Birmingham pub bombings, even though the Court of Appeal quashed the convictions in 1991.
Mr Evans made his comments while addressing pupils at a school in his Welwyn Hatfield constituency. Yesterday the former MP apologised to the men in the High Court in London and paid them an undisclosed "appropriate" sum. The six men spent 16 years in prison.
