THE IRA has appeared again on a US list of terrorist organisations following the ending of the ceasefire over a year ago. The IRA was not on the list in 1995 because of the ceasefire.

The IRA's terrorist actions are noted in the State Department's annual report on global trends in terrorism in 1996 issued yesterday. The list is a chronology of terrorist actions rather than a definitive list of terrorist organisations.

Iran is again at the top of the list of states accused of sponsoring terrorism. Cuba, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria are also on the list which bars the countries concerned from receiving US aid.

Although the number of terrorist acts worldwide is shown to have decreased to 296 - the lowest figure in 25 years the number of people killed in such acts last year is one of the highest at 311. This includes the 19 American killed in a truck bombing at a US barracks in Saudi Arabia.
