Washington - A lesion removed from President Bill Clinton's back in a routine medical check-up last week has been established to have been cancerous, the White House said yesterday.

"The pathology results that were read this morning confirm that the lesion was a superficial basal cell skin cancer," a spokesman, Mr Jake Siewert, told a news conference, adding that indications were the lesion had been safely removed.

He said the risk of recurrence was low.
