At least 300 people staged a protest in central Belfast last night against the housing of sex offenders at a hostel for ex-prisoners.

Residents from the area blocked the Dublin Road and Great Victoria Street demanding the authorities stopped housing released sex offenders at a hostel for the rehabilitation of offenders.

Police said there was traffic disruption as the residents of Donegall Pass, Sandy Row and the village area made their protest.

A similar demonstration was staged last week. There were no arrests.

A 77-year-old sex offender, who was declared by police to be a high risk to women and girls, disappeared from the hostel recently.

After a public appeal for help in tracking him he was arrested in Lurgan, County Armagh.

He was returned to Belfast and remanded in custody at the city's magistrates' court charged with leaving approved accommodation and failing to inform the police of his new address and failing to sign the sex offender's register.
