Belfast City Council today announced a shortlist of five potential sites for a multi-purpose sports stadium for the city.
The Stormont Executive has been sent the proposals for a stadium in Belfast as the odds of giving the green light to a stadium on the site of the Maze Prison appeared to lengthen.
A business plan produced by development consultants for the council has been sent to the Department of Finance and Personnel and to the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure for their consideration.
Cllr Bob Stoker, chairman of the Belfast council’s Parks and Leisure Committee, repeated a call for ministers to work in conjunction with the council and for private developers to deliver a stadium in the most cost effective way to meet the needs of sports and the demands of fans for a city location.
“All the evidence shows that sports stadia should be in city centre locations and we believe the business plan that has been developed is the clearest indication yet that the stadium should be located in Belfast,” said Mr Stoker.
The five potential sites are Maysfield, Ormeau Park, North Foreshore, Boucher Road and the Blanchflower/Tommy Patton Park.
