The Consumers Association of Ireland has called for the setting up of an independent food safety inspection agency to oversee the production of beef, "separate from the Minister for Agriculture."

It expressed dismay at the continuing use of animal hormones ("angel dust") in the rearing of cattle and said that fines, however substantial, did not seem to be a sufficient deterrent.
