Former world boxing champion Mr Barry McGuigan is to be disqualified from acting as a company director, the High Court in Belfast was told yesterday. His wife, Sandra, faces a similar penalty. The couple were not present for the hearing.
The move follows the collapse of their promotional company, Barrandra, with debts of £80,000. The application was brought by the Department of Economic Development under the NI Companies Order. Under this, the court can impose a ban for up to 15 years.
A lawyer for the Department said Mr McGuigan (35) had filed a statement indicating that he and his wife were not resisting the application but wished to give mitigating evidence.
Mr Michael Keogh, counsel for the McGuigans, said he was consenting to the application to fix a date which he hoped would dispose of the matter. The hearing was adjourned until May 16th.
