Arsenal utility player Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be on his way out of Highbury after Barcelona confirmed they are trying to sign the Dutchman.
The 28-year-old former Rangers and Feyenoord player, who can line up at left-back or in midfield, has been unable to command a regular place in Arsene Wenger's team.
Van Bronckhorst suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in February 2002 that kept him sidelined until the start of 2003, but England international Ashley Cole is Wenger's first-choice left-back and the Gunners have a wealth of talent in midfield.
Barcelona spokesman Jordi Badia said: "Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell is in London negotiating with Arsenal about our interest in the Dutch player van Bronckhorst.
"There is still nothing settled and we are evaluating other options. There is still time before August 31st."
The transfer deadline is on Sunday and Barca coach Frank Rijkaard, who had van Bronckhorst in his squad when he coached Holland at Euro 2000, is determined to strengthen the left side of his team.
