Dhaka - Army troops and volunteers evacuated at least 10,000 people in Bangladesh after soldiers failed to plug a huge breach in an embankment and dozens of villages were flooded, government officials said yesterday.

They said chunks of the 10-ft embankment had given way near Comilla town, leaving a gap of about 250 feet and water from the rain-swollen Gomti river was flooding the area.
