Tipperary South faces an immediate waste-management crisis with the banning of commercial refuse from the county dump.
Private refuse operators say they have not received sufficient notice of the ban and waste will go uncollected from this week.
Councillors were told at Monday's meeting of Tipperary South Council that the decision to cease accepting commercial, industrial and business waste at the Donohill landfill could not be postponed. It was implemented yesterday.
The county manager, Mr Ned Gleeson, said the council had been working with businesses to come up with a solution. Until adequate recycling facilities were in place, it would continue to collect dry recyclables and organic waste,
Private waste-collectors, said this would be of no benefit to their customers. Mr Mick Duggan, who operates in the Cahir, Cashel and Tipperary areas, said he could not collect skips when he had no place to take them. "As far as I'm concerned we're out of business," he told The Irish Times.
Mr Dermot Walshe, owner of Walshe Waste which collects daily from restaurants and other commercial clients, said he was still talking to the council in the hope of finding a solution.
Council officials said they had no choice but to act, given the diminishing capacity of the existing landfill at Donohill and legal difficulties which have delayed plans to open a new dump at Grangemockler.
In a report circulated to members for Monday's meeting, Mr Ray O'Dwyer, director of services with the council, said the move was necessary to ensure "the extremely limited space remaining" at Donohill was preserved for household waste. It was appreciated it would have "serious implications" for commercial and industrial waste producers.
All of the commercial waste carriers operating in the county, as well as IBEC, had been informed of the situation and were actively sourcing outlets for recyclable materials.
Mr O'Dwyer told last month's council meeting that neighbouring counties had been asked to take Tipperary South's commercial waste but had been unable to assist.
