The Irish Times Technology Reporter, Jamie Smyth, was named the Irish Internet Association's technology journalist of the year at its 2004 Net Visionary Awards event held in Dublin last night.

Mr Smyth, who has worked at The Irish Times since 1999, was one of 11 category winners at the awards, which honour individuals for achievements in the field of Internet technologies.

The managing director of the Internet service provider Netsource, Mr Tom Kelly, won the overall title of Net Visionary, which is now in its sixth year.

Other category winners include: Mr Tom Murphy of Boards.ie; Mr Martin McKay of Texthelp; Mr Frank Daly of Revenue.ie; Mr Fergal O'Byrne; Mr Fergal Lawler; Mr Kiran Shah; Mr Brendan Rice; Mr Aodhan Cullen; Mr Seaghan Moriarty; and Mr Donal McGuinness. The overall winner of the Net Visionary award is chosen by the board of the Irish Internet Association for a considerable contribution to the Internet industry. Category-winners are chosen through an audited online voting system.
