A man dressed in fatigues and carrying a semi-automatic weapon opened fire yesterday on a university campus in Cleveland, Ohio, wounding at least two people, witnesses and police told US media.

The gunman went to Case Western Reserve University around 4.15 pm (10.15 p.m. Irish time) and shot at a group of students, one of whom has been hospitalised.

He then went inside a building and fired several more shots over 90 minutes, wounding another student whom rescuers were not immediately able to reach, university officials said.

The gunman was holed up on the second floor of the building, which was surrounded by police at 7 p.m. (Midnight Irish time).

School officials could not say how many people were trapped inside the building.
