Windhoek - At least nine people were killed in fighting yesterday between Namibian security forces and secessionists who took over a radio station in Katima Mulilo, the main town of the country's northeastern Caprivi region, officials said.

The rebels occupied the studios of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) on Sunday night but yesterday were overrun by troops and police who had bombarded the building with mortar fire, a military commander said.

At least six members of the security forces and three suspected rebels were killed in the clashes, which also included an attempt to take over the army base and police station in the town.
