Last night saw the official opening, by IMMA chairperson Marie Donnelly, of the Fenton Gallery on Wandesford Quay in Cork. The launch of this major new venue marks a significant moment for contemporary visual arts in the region, given the enduring concentration of commercial galleries in Dublin. The Fenton takes its name from the woman at the helm, Nuala Fenton, late of the Crawford Municipal Gallery, and she starts on a high note, with a survey of Cork sculptor Dorothy Cross's work over the last decade (Chiasm by Cross is pictured right), and an exhibition of new paintings by Charles Tyrrell, who is based in Allihies.
