Gardaí investigating the circumstances behind the attempted abduction of a teenage girl in Co Offaly have arrested a man in his 40s.

The man was arrested in the Tramore area of Co Waterford this morning and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Tullamore Garda station.

The incident occured on July 19th when a man attempted to abduct a teenager who was out cycling between her home and a friend's house - a distance of just 500m.

The man stopped and asked the 13-year-old girl for directions before attempting to pull her into the back of the van. She escaped, and the driver drove off in the direction of Ferbane.

The incident happened in the townsland of Moyclare on the road to Clonlyon approximately 2km outside Ferbane.
