Port Harcourt - Hundreds of people have fled an army operation in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta by soldiers seeking the killers of 12 policemen, witnesses said yesterday.

They said the troops had taken scores of people to a military camp in the crackdown that began at the weekend in Odi, where an armed group murdered the policemen early this month, and surrounding communities.

Activists of the Ijaw community, who have been campaigning for more of the oil region's wealth, said dozens of people had been killed.
