The Arab League has called for Tunisia's political forces and other groups to keep the peace and lead the North African country out of crisis after the president was swept from power amid widespread protests.

In the first major Arab statement on developments in Tunisia, the League called "for all political forces, representatives of Tunisian society and officials to stand together and unite to maintain the achievements of the Tunisian people and realise national peace."

It called for a return to calm and urged Tunisians to reach a "national consensus on ways to bring the country out of this crisis in a way that guarantees respect for the will of the Tunisian people".

Meanwhile, the country's s airspace and airports are open for civilian flights, the official news agency has said.

"The office for civil aviation and airports states Tunisian airspace and all the airports are open for air traffic, contrary to what has been reported in some media," the office said in a statement quoted by the official TAP news agency.
