Cairo - Egypt's cassation court yesterday began hearing US-Egyptian rights activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim's plea to overturn a seven-year jail sentence handed down in May.

A sociology professor at the American University of Cairo, he was sentenced for spreading "false" reports abroad about electoral fraud and religious persecution and receiving unauthorised EU funding.
