The IRA has some 800 active members in Ireland, the Chief Constable of the RUC, Sir Hugh Annesley, has said in an interview on RTE radio.
He said some 350 were in the Republic and between 400 and 500 in Northern Ireland, although this number depended on how IRA membership was defined.
