A spokeswoman for NTL said last night that the company was carrying out work on the road which was part of the sale agreement between Eircom and Cablelink before Cablelink was bought by NTL.

She said NTL had permission from Dublin Corporation to carry out roadworks between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. in the area. She said a truck had broken down in the area and the company had apologised to the residents for the noise. She said it had not come to her attention that road works had continued until 2.30 a.m.

Dublin Corporation confirmed there was no authorisation to drill past 11 p.m. A spokesman said that an inspector was being sent down last night to investigate the complaint. He said the inspector would also be talking to the Garda.
