The remaining contingent of loyal Irish soccer supporters left Dublin airport today, deflated and angry over the events of the last week.

But as former skipper Roy Keane is left in his luxury Cheshire home to contemplate his row with Mick McCarthy, Ireland fans remain determined to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan.

Mr and Mrs Harnett from Tallaght both complained that the "atmosphere doesn't feel the same as previous tournaments". They said they were obviously deflated that "the number one man wasn't going to be playing".

Martin Taylor from Baldoyle in Dublin said the mood amongst Irish fans has been deflated. "But it's not just about one guy. Our opponents have forgotten about the heart that is in the team," he added.

John Conlon from Mayo said if he hadn't already paid for the trip he would not be going. "The FAI have shafted Roy. I will never ever put foot in Lansdowne Road again while Mick McCarthy is manager," he said.

Colm Carol from Glasnevin was sure the Irish team would rise above the Keane saga: "We've done it before without Roy Keane and we'll do it again," he said.

Dominic from Galway agreed, laying the blame firmly at the Corkman's feet. "We're going to support Ireland, Keane or no Keane. He has let us down big time," he said.

Bernard Lane, also from Galway, said his heart was broken. "I am sickened by the events of the last week."

But two boistrous Ireland fans assured ireland.combefore entering the departure lounge: "We always celebrate, win, lose or draw."

Ireland's opening game against Cameroon in Niigata kicks off at 7.30 a.m. Irish time on Saturday.
