Angola's UNITA rebels claim they shot down a government army plane, killing all 22 passengers aboard.

UNITA said the Antonov An26 was shot down near Luena, capital of the eastern province of Moxico.

"The plane crashed near the airport...all its 22 passengers died in the attack," a statement, signed by rebel leader Geraldo Abreu Kamorteiro, said.

It gave no further details and no independent confirmation of the incident was immediately available.
