Protesters have gathered outside the Royal Bank of Scotland's Glasgow headquarters to demonstrate against its decision to open Scottish branches today.
Bank union spokesman Mr Rob MacGregor accused the bank of ignoring the wishes of employees and disregarding Scotland's distinctive bank holidays.
He claimed there was evidence some staff had been instructed to work, despite the bank's assurances that only those who wanted to work were staffing branches.
Mr MacGregor said "It's recognised by just about everybody as a public holiday. What the bank has basically done is Anglicise the bank holidays in Scotland.
"We never used to have Easter Monday as a holiday and the bank holiday in August has been moved to the end of the month, which is no use to most Scottish families as their children are back at school.
Mr MacGregor said the bank had refused to compensate staff who worked today with days off in lieu or overtime pay.
"If they are saying that anybody who didn't want to work didn't have to turn up, we would find that very hard to believe given our experience of the approach of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
"We have anecdotal evidence that people have been told they are required to work and action will be taken if they don't.
"There is not going to be a huge amount of business today and the bank clearly accepts that because it's reduced the opening hours. It's tokenism and they really should see sense."
