Eight members of a traditional Amish sect have been jailed in Kentucky after they refused to pay fines for failure to display orange-red safety triangles on their horse-drawn buggies.
The eight were taken to the Graves County Jail earlier this week to serve sentences ranging between three and 10 days for failing to pay the fines on religious grounds.
All but one of the men have now been released. The last man will be freed on September 21st.
The men are members of a traditional Amish group, the Old Order of Swartzentruber – known for simple living, plain dress and reluctance to adopt modern conveniences.
They claim the bright reflector violated their religion which restricts wearing flamboyant colours and relying on man-made symbols for their safety.
