This follows the grounding of all planes at US airports and the closure of US borders yesterday.

London City Airport is also closed this morning, the spokesman said, which led to the cancellation of one flight.

The airport is expected to open after midday but passengers are advised to check first with Aer Lingus, the only Irish operator into London City airport.

"Everything is operating as normal bar those flights," the spokesman said.

Security has been tightened at all Irish airports and worldwide which may lead to slight delays as it will take longer to process passengers, he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have advised people travelling abroad to contact their airlines or travel agency before departing about any changes to their flights due the increased tension and disruption to airline schedules worldwide.

In a statement it said: "Those travelling abroad should exercise extreme caution and vigilance and pay close attention to advise from security authorities."
