A health alert regarding shellfish, including mussels, oysters, clams and scallops, harvested from Waterford Estuary, Dungarvan and Bannow Bay has been issued by the South- Eastern Health Board.
The board said diarrhetic shellfish poisoning toxicity had been detected in bivalve shellfish harvested from these areas during routine monitoring by the Department of the Marine. Cooking does not destroy the toxins and people have been advised not to eat bivalve shellfish from the areas concerned.
The warning came only two days after a similar alert concerning shellfish harvested from Waterford Estuary and Wexford Harbour had been lifted by the board.
