A Dublin Circuit Criminal Court judge has ordered that €33,000 found on a man at Dublin airport on his way to Amsterdam be confiscated and forfeited to the State.

Judge Tony Hunt ordered that the cash found on William Mulcaire (30), Lucan, by Customs officers be confiscated after he said he was satisfied that the DPP had proved that it was the proceeds of crime.

Mulcaire told Customs officers he was going on holidays and was planning to “go mad”. He later claimed the money was to put a deposit on a vehicle on behalf of Alan Boggins, Clondalkin.

Dominic McGinn, for the Revenue, told Judge Hunt that the State believed the money was for criminal activities. He also said Mr Boggins had been caught with 173,000 cigarettes and 5kg of tobacco on which duty had not been paid.
