In an attempt to lure more customers online Allied Irish Bank is to cut account maintenance charges from £3.75 per quarter to zero.

The new charges, which become effective on August 25th, will also reduce charges on automated transactions from 15p to 12p.

The company says the move is an attempt to promote e-banking.

Head of AIB Business Banking, Mr John Kelly,said: "The more costly paper-based transactions continue to dominate the payments system."

"The new package of fees and charges is structured to make electronic/automated banking transactions more cost effective to a wider range of customers," he said.
