The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, called yesterday for an independent judicial public inquiry into the killing of the Belfast solicitor Ms Rosemary Nelson two years ago. Mr Ahern was speaking after a meeting in Government Buildings with members of Ms Nelson's family and representatives of a number of human rights organisation.

Mr Ahern acknowledged the "enormous effort and resources" which had gone into the investigation of the murder. However, it was essential that the truth be established in a manner which would "command the confidence of the entire community".

Ms Nelson died two years ago when a bomb exploded under her car.
