Aer Rianta are advising passengers travelling to and from Dublin Airport today that traffic restrictions will be in place around the terminal building.

The restrictions are in place as almost 5,000 Special Olympic athletes and their families begin journeys home.

To facilitate the departing athletes, the inside lane of the departures road will be dedicated to the Special Olympics coaches only.

Passengers are advised by Aer Rianta to give themselves extra time if travelling to and from the airport today.

An Aer Rianta spokeswoman said that extra airport staff and volunteers will be available to ensure the departure of Special Olympics athletes goes smoothly.

When Special Olympics athletes go through the passenger-screening area they will be treated to live music, stilt-walkers and street characters providing entertainment on their departure.

Finally, as they board their aircraft, pipers from the Black Raven Band will salute the athletes as they start their homeward journeys.
