Advertising revenue for Ireland's national newspapers increased by 25 per cent between April and June, compared to the same period last year.

The newspapers also saw a massive increase in the volume of advertising, according to the managing director of Advertising Statistics Ireland, Mr Kevin McSharry.

Advertising revenue increased from £39.3 million to £49.5 million, while the volume of advertising increased from 519,000 column inches to 615,000 column inches. The sports newspaper, the Title, is included in the figures for 1997.

The findings contradict figures published last week, which showed a decline in newspaper advertising. However, Mr McSharry, said that unless comparisons are made on a like-with-like basis there will be distortion in the figures.

He said the figures show newspapers are in the forefront of advertising growth. Two key areas have been property and appointments advertising, with retail advertising showing strongly.
