An addict who swallowed packets of heroin during a search later produced the drugs at a Garda station, a court has been told. Paul Nolan (28), of Lower Oriel Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to obstructing a search and having £60 worth of heroin at Richmond Road, Ballybough, on March 6th.

Garda Mark Jordan, of the North City Drugs Unit, said Nolan was cycling along the road, tried to escape when stopped and then swallowed drugs which he had in his mouth. "He later produced them voluntarily at Store Street Garda station. It was three £20 packets of heroin."

Judge Miriam Malone imposed a six-month sentence after hearing that Nolan had 18 previous convictions.
