The Tanaiste and PD leader, Ms Harney, said yesterday she was determined to initiate legal action on the Ansbacher accounts if the contents of her Department inspectors' investigations warranted it. She said four chartered accountants from her Department were working in four banks in connection with the Ansbacher and other accounts.

"If there were breaches of the Company Law, I will initiate legal action under the 1990 Act."

She said she was empowered to send the reports of her inspectors to both the Revenue Commissioners and the Central Bank as well as the DPP "and I am determined to do that".

The Tanaiste yesterday paid tribute to President Clinton for the role he has played in efforts to find peace in the North.
