Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas is to convene a special session of parliament next week to debate the government's future.

A senior official said the Palestinian Legislative Council would debate "the current crisis", which has posed obstacles to a US-backed plan for peace with Israel, and could pave the way for a vote of confidence later.

He said the parliamentary session could open the way to discussion on "whether this government stays, is amended or will be removed".

Mr Abbas, in a power struggle with President Yasser Arafat, is apparently trying to shore up support for his struggling cabinet at a session that will coincide with his completion of 100 days in office since Mr Arafat reluctantly appointed him, under US and Israeli, pressure to share power.

Mr Arafat's recent moves have seemed aimed at reasserting control over security forces at a time when Mr Abbas is facing US demands to disarm Palestinian militants against the backdrop of a collapsed truce and a relapse into violence.

Washington had tried to sideline Mr Arafat but last week US Secretary of State Mr Colin Powell called on him to work with Mr Abbas for peace.
