A student who suffered a brain injury when his head was clipped by the mirror of a Waterford City Council truck as he stood at pedestrian lights has been awarded €300,000 damages by the High Court.
Ciarán Chestnutt had told the court that since the accident in 2007, his memory was hopeless and he could not smell or taste.
Mr Chestnutt (25), Greystones, Co Wicklow, had sued the driver of the truck, council worker Michael Coyne, and Waterford City Council, owner of the truck.
It was claimed that Mr Chestnutt was lawfully standing at lights on Paddy Brown's Road, Waterford on October 26th, 2007 when he was hit by the truck, suffering severe personal injuries, loss and damage.
