Kaduna - Religious riots that have left at least 20 people dead and scores of buildings and cars destroyed in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna resumed yesterday despite a curfew.
More than 1,000 armed police and troops were drafted into northern Nigeria's second largest city and police chiefs claimed to have quelled the rioting that began on Monday over demands for the introduction of Islamic Sharia law.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian President, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo, said the government would do whatever it considered necessary to restore law and order to Kaduna.
The worst trouble to hit Kaduna in years began on Monday during a protest by tens of thousands of Christians against demands by members of the Muslim community for the imposition of the strict Islamic code in the city.
