Two men were feared drowned last night after a car was driven off the pier at Rossaveal in Co Galway.

It is understood there were three occupants in the car, all believed to be from Lithuania, when it entered the water after 10pm. One of them managed to get out of the car and swim to safety.

Garda divers were on their way to the scene early this morning to help in the rescue effort.

The men are believed to have been based in Achill, Co Mayo, but working in the fishing industry at Rossaveal.

In other weekend accidents six people died on Northern Ireland's roads. One person died in Co Donegal following a collision involving two cars near Inver on the main road between Killybegs and Donegal town. The victim was 24-year-old Barry Gallagher. The driver of the other car is in intensive care in Sligo General Hospital.

The first of the six fatalities in the North was Niall Gerard McGowan (19), who died following a crash between Newcastle and Castlewellan, Co Down, on Friday night. A few hours later a man and a woman died in a crash on the Frosses Road outside Ballymena, Co Antrim. The PSNI named the dead woman as Marjorie Kerr (45). The name of the 48-year-old man who died has yet to be released.

In Derry, two women were killed in a crash on the Culmore Road area of the city shortly after 9am on Saturday. They were Bernie McElhinney (57) and her daughter, Lisa Maria McElhinney (31), from Tullyalley, Redcastle, Co Donegal.

The sixth person to die in Northern Ireland was Karl McAuley (17) who died after the car he was driving crashed on the Tobermore Road, Draperstown, Co Derry, after 2pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, gardaí yesterday named the woman who died as a result of a road traffic collision at Castlemahon Cross, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, on Saturday as Donna Sheehan (21) of Dromcollogher, Co Limerick.

While in a separate inquiry, gardaí investigating a fatal road collision at Lismeenan, Castleshane, Co Monaghan, between two cars on Friday, are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact Monaghan Garda station on 047-77200.

The man who died was Séamus Kerr (59) of Carrickanure, Annyalla, Co Monaghan.
