£2.25 m award over negligence

London - A mother yesterday spoke of her relief at the award of £2.25 million after medical negligence left her daughter brain-damaged at birth. Mrs Sally Murphy (40) from Caerphilly, south Wales, won her 14-year battle against Wirral Health Authority at the High Court sitting in Manchester.

Her daughter, Danielle (14) was left permanently disabled because of lack of oxygen when she was born at Arrowe Park Hospital, Merseyside, on Christmas Day.

The pay-out comes after an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal that the hospital was 90 per cent to blame for Danielle's cerebral palsy.

Speaking outside the court yesterday, Mrs Murphy said: "People think it's like winning the Lottery, but it's got no comparison. There is a lot of heartache behind all this."
