CHARITY TRIP:A CHARITY FOR the homeless is looking for five more people to join a trek to Iceland in September, which will take in volcanoes, glaciers, steaming lava fields, boiling mud pools and spouting geysers.

The Peter McVerry Trust, which is hoping to raise €75,000, has already enlisted 20 people to go and believes it may be the only Irish group planning to trek in Iceland this year since the volcanic eruptions.

Registration for the five-day trip, which will explores one of the earth’s most volcanic regions, closes at the end of May.

Anne Marie Connolly, head of fundraising and communications, said people of all ages and from all walks of life will be taking part on the trip.“If you’ve a good pair of hiking boots and a good mental attitude, anyone can get through it,”she said.

The challenge is to complete 60km across rough and varied terrain. Participants will be rewarded for their efforts by relaxing in one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions – the Blue Lagoon – as well as visiting Reykjavik before returning home.

This trek will help the Peter McVerry Trust to raise the necessary funds to continue supporting young homeless people through its housing and support services.
