Baboró

Children in and around Galway have exciting school tours planned for next week, as Baboró International Arts Festival sparks into action. There are plenty of events on offer outside the school schedule, because this year Baboró has invited 13 child-oriented theatre and performance companies to the west and installed them in 13 venues.

Throughout the week-long festival, which begins on Monday, the streets of Galway city centre will be taken over by all sorts of creatures, from a shoal of punk-rock sardines looking for a ghost ship to an unruly serpent as Galway’s own street-theatre group perform Random Acts of Macnas.

Even tiny children are catered for in the programme. At the Blue Tea Pot Theatre and Druids Lane Theatre, PigNut theatre company will be staging Ahhhh!!, a magic show for children between 18 months and three years old.

The festival ends tomorrow week with a noisy free session in which everyone from grandparents to toddlers is encouraged to join the Wassa Wassa Drum Circle in making music.

See baboro.ie for details of performance times and, where applicable, admission prices. For out-of- towners, there’s a good section on the site about how to get to Galway, although the places-to-stay section is disappointing, as no special offers are mentioned.
