GO BATTY:THERE ARE scary looking bats hanging in windows and over doorways this weekend, right alongside hollowed-out pumpkins and broomsticks.

Real live bats aren’t half as spooky or as big though, but they are nocturnal which makes them seem more mysterious.

This is a good time of year to go looking for them during bat walks organised by one the several bat groups around the country taking place most weekends. (See bat conservationireland.ie for details on how to contact your local group).

There are 10 bat species in Ireland (all protected) though you’d need expert knowledge to tell the difference between them – and not to be scared to get up close.

All bat walk leaders say that one of the most common questions asked on a night-time walk is if there’s a chance a bat will get stuck in your hair, as they do in all the best horror movies. There isn’t.

This evening at Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, there will be a guided bat walk starting at 7pm. Wear warm clothes and strong shoes as you’ll be walking in muddy areas and bring a small hand torch if you can.

For little people who find staying up late too difficult there’s the Boo in the Zoo in Dublin Zoo, Phoenix Park from midday tomorrow where you can spot the fruit bats. Go dressed up as there will be prizes for the best Halloween costume.
