Youghal Family FunFestival Last year the east Cork seaside town of Youghal was designated a Family Fun destination by Fáilte Ireland and, keen to prove that it deserves the label, the entire town is hosting a Family Fun Festival this weekend.
Youghal has four miles of Blue Flag beach, which is a good start for any family outing. Many of this weekend’s activities are water-based, including the sandcastle- building competition at the Mall Beach at noon and the crab-catching competition at the quayside at 3pm, both today. Tomorrow, Youghal’s coastguards will be giving water safety displays all afternoon. Later there will be a massive raft race, so take up your viewing position on the quayside from 7.30pm.
Events in the townsound particularly creative. They include a children's busking competition, which will take place along Main Street all afternoon today.
From noon tomorrow, a good spot to plant yourself might be Greenpark (opposite the Walter Raleigh Hotel). Here, as well as a bouncy castle, there will be the sort of events you’d find in an old-fashioned sports day: a “fastest daddy” competition, the Walter Raleigh spud and spoon race, a teddy-bears’ hospital and a three-legged race. All are free. A food market at Market Square is an ideal place to pick up the makings of a picnic.
