The Heineken Cup begins next month as Munster try to defend the title they won last May at the Millennium Stadium.

After a home fixture against French side Montauban, the European champions' first away trip is a difficult tie against Sale Sharks on Sunday, October 19th. The English side beat Munster at Edgeley Park when the sides last met there in the competition, three years ago.

• Leinster, who will be hoping for an improved showing this year, open their campaign on October 11th with a tricky trip to Edinburgh, to play a team that have beaten them on two recent visits to Scotland.

HORSE RACING

The Breeders' Cup takes place in Santa Anita, California, next month, with Aidan O'Brien and Jim Bolger among the big-name Irish trainers due to be represented at the prestigious two-day race meeting. The $5 million (€3.6 million) Breeders' Cup Classic is one of 14 races that will be held on October 24th and 25th.

Leopardstown Tours (01-2958901, www. leopardstowntours.com) has a five-night deal that will take in all the action. The price includes return flights from Dublin to LA via London Heathrow, Club House seats at the racecourse and buffet lunches on both days. The trip, from October 21st to 27th, also includes transfers and the services of a tour representative. The deal, based on two people sharing, starts at €2,843. A three-night Las Vegas extension is also available on request.
