FISKER, THE electrical sports car firm is reportedly set to purchase a closed General Motors production plant in Delaware in the US to build its plug-in hybrid cars. The move is backed by a $528.7 million loan from the US government.

The re-opening of the plant is expected to create about 2,000 jobs, with production runs of up to 100,000 cars annually. Half of these will be for export.

The loan from the US government was part of a $25 billion US programme intended to spur a market for the vehicles to reduce fuel use and production of greenhouse gases. Fisker may also generate 3,000 jobs at suppliers.
