IF YOU feel like being alone and are looking for a property where you’ll be master of all you survey, two intriguing possibilities have come on the market and they will come cheaper than a period semi in Dublin 4.
One option is your own private island for $1.5 million (€1.13 million), through International Fine Properties Liaison. Jonathan Island, Rhode Island, is on the western side of Narragansett Bay, about 14 miles south-west of Newport Harbor, 25 miles from Providence and a one-hour drive away from Boston Logan International Airport.
The property itself is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house with 167sq m (1,800sq ft) of interior space. Set on nearly three acres of land, it comes with a private dock.
Given that it is the only property on the island, residents won’t have to worry about the prospect of undesirable neighbours. It’s also an ideal spot for fishing: striped bass, steamer clams, oysters and scallops can be taken from the island’s shores.
Another option closer to home is Anner Castle in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, a 19th-century castle on 131 acres which is on the market for €1.5 million through Savills.
The castle, enlarged in the 1860s by William Atkins, is only partially habitable but still has 438 sq m (4,715sq ft) of living space and a four-bedroom lodge house on its grounds, which has a river with trout fishing rights.
