Hoteliers sing a happy tune to MTV event

The MTV Awards roll into town in November and bring relief to many hoteliers from the usual pre-Christmas slump

The MTV Awards roll into town in November and bring relief to many hoteliers from the usual pre-Christmas slump. With 5,000 people expected to attend the event, hotel rooms will be scarce on the ground.

Top music and high fashion will mingle at the most glittery event in Dublin this year, to be held in the Point Depot on November 11th. Top choices for the pop stars and crews include the Clarence, the new Morrison, Stakis, Merrion, the Fitzwilliam, Morgan, Shelbourne, Conrad, and the Burlington. None of the hotels know who will be staying with them as rooms and suites will be allocated by MTV closer to the date. Security is expected to be very tight.

Many of those coming to Dublin are fans who will travel from all over the world to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars. While many of the stars are expected to be in town for one night only, hoteliers expect many others to extend their stay in "the hottest capital in Europe". The awards have been described as a great coup for Dublin.

Top on the list of priorities for high profile visitors is security. The Fitzwilliam, the Terence Conran designed minimalist hotel on St Stephen's Green, was one of the first choices for the view of the Green and its underground carpark, which allows guests direct and discreet access to the hotel. Its proximity to Grafton Street and that other hangout of the stars, Planet Hollywood, were also factors that influenced the choice.
