AN ANTIQUES roadshow-type event in south Dublin last Sunday produced at least one important find.
Experts from Adam’s auctioneers who provided valuations in Cabinteely House in Dublin 18 said “the best piece of the day was an oil painting of Dublin Bay” which they valued at up to €10,000. The 19th century painting was brought for assessment by an unnamed man who had inherited it.
Adam’s said the oil painting was by William Sadler II (also known as William Sadler the Younger). Two paintings by the artist (1782-1839) The French in Killala Bay and A View of the Inn, Baldoyle are in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
James O’Halloran of Adam’s said “if the man decides to sell the painting at auction it would be assigned an estimate of €7,000-€10,000”. He said that Adam’s had met 800 people who brought over 2,000 items to be valued. Not everyone left happy. Many people who brought paintings to be valued were disappointed to discover that they had “prints and not original works of art”.
Joe Burns of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, which organised the event, said “Cabinteely House never looked so alive” and that “people came out in their droves”. – MP
