Tuesday (November 15th): Lindsay and Burns, Perth, Scotland. A Gipsy by Sir John Lavery, found in an attic in Scotland, sold to a private Scottish buyer for £19,200 (£10,000-15,000).
Sotheby’s Geneva set a world auction record for a yellow diamond when it sold the 110ct “Sun-Drop” diamond for €9.052 million.
Wednesday (November 16th): O'Reilly's Auction Rooms, 126 Francis St, Dublin 8. Art deco diamond panel bracelet (pictured above), signed Hennell, estimated weight of diamonds, 18.00 ct, €25,000 (€24,000-€26,000); a diamond target ring by Tiffany and Co, weight of centre stone, 2.03 ct, €25,000 (€25,000-€30,000); art deco diamond and sapphire plaque ring, featuring a square diamond with sapphire surround, in original 1920s platinum mount, €11,000 (€10,000-€12,000).
Christie’s, South Kensington, London. Two Hermès handbags achieved the top price of £46,850 (€54,861). These were an amethyst matt crocodile “Birkin” bag, 2009, and a havane matt crocodile “Birkin” bag, 2007. Both surpassed their pre-sale estimate of £26,000-£28,000 each.
Forthcoming Auctions
Tuesday (November 22nd): Sotheby's Paris, 20th century decorative arts and contemporary design sale features two major pieces of art deco furniture by Enniscorthy-born designer Eileen Gray. A Transat armchair, commissioned in 1930 for the Palace of the Maharajah of Indore, is estimated at €800,000 to €1 million; and a table Gray designed for her home, the villa Tempe à Pailla in the south of France, is estimated at €100,000-€150,000.
