Moller's manly maidens Lucy Moller from Killester is this year's winner of the River Island bursary, which provides her with a three-month internship at the company's head office in London.

Moller is a fashion graduate of the National College of Art and Design. Her collection, entitled Cut to Kill, was inspired by men's tailoring and the "manly maidens", 19th-century women who dressed up as men. Moller's work experience as a student included stints with Louis Copeland and with Roisin Gartland, and her collection included a jacket made entirely of lapels; a bustier dress in carved brown leather, and a pinstriped frock coat. Starting in September, she will work with the 70-strong design team in River Island, following in the footsteps of two previous Irish winners, Catherine Lyons and Sara Cochrane.

Vuitton vision

The new collection of sunglasses designed by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton is bold and handsome in appearance and technically advanced. You'd almost buy them for their hinges alone - details which took their inspiration from LV's signature luggage fixtures. The frames are cut and polished by hand in France and the brand name is set into plastic in a manner resembling marquetry. German specialists Zeiss were consulted in the creation of the optical lenses which give good protection and also reduce glare. The 12 frame styles come in a variety of colours and materials. The shades cost around €280-€300 a pair and can only be found in Louis Vuitton outlets.

Band appeal

The clever little fixtures that look like shirt stud fasteners, attached to each arm to secure the band, are part of the appeal of these sunglasses, as well as the cool shape of the lens. The great advantage is that you don't have to keep making sure the rubber fasteners of conventional cords are in place for a comfortable fit. The sporty striped band can be detached as necessary. They're by Polo Jeans, and they come in two shapes called "Friendly" and "Mercer", in various colours, including black. They cost €125 from Stein Opticians, 4 Camden Market, Grantham Street, Dublin 8, 01-4751275.
