Peter Lehmann Barossa Riesling, Australia, 12%, €9.99 (on offer for €7.99 at some outlets) One of the best-value wines you can buy. Fresh pineapple and green-apple fruits in a delicious light dry wine. An all- purpose wine you could happily sip on its own or serve with fish or seafood. From: selected Spars; Superquinn, Dublin; Boomers, Clondalkin; Coolers, Swords; Corks, Terenure; Jus de Vine, Portmarnock.

Finca La Linda Viognier 2004, Mendoza, Argentina, 13.5%, €9.99 A big, rich wine, full of luscious tropical fruits - pears, apricots - with a lovely creamy texture. Viognier goes well with grilled or roast chicken, along with barbecued fish and most spicy oriental foods. From: Claudio's, Drury Street; Donnybrook Fair; Gibneys, Malahide; Liston's, Camden Street; On the Grapevine, Dalkey and Booterstown; Morton's, Salthill and Galway; Halpin's Fine Wines, Wicklow and Gorey.

Château Cazal Viel Saint Chinian Vieilles Vignes 2003, France, 13.5%, €8.99 An excellent, big, rich, hearty wine, brimming with delicious rustic fruits, with lovely ripe tannins on the finish. One of my favourite wines. "Vieilles vignes" on a label means the vines used to make the wine are at least 25 years old. I would happily drink this with virtually any meat or cheese dish, including pasta. From: Tesco.

Otto Bestué Somontano 2003, Spain, 13.5%, €9.99 Light, elegant summer fruits and blackcurrants with a smoky touch, just enough acidity to keep real interest and a stylish, smooth finish. Nothing too big or powerful with this - I would try it on its own or with lighter chicken, lamb and pork dishes. From: Dunnes Stores.

The Wolftrap 2004, Western Cape, South Africa, 14.5%, €8.99 A rich, dark, satisfying wine with smoky cherry fruits and a touch of chocolate. Smooth but with a dry finish. A full-bodied red that calls for red meat, either roast or barbecued. Vegetarians should think of ratatouille or something equally full-flavoured. From: Superquinn.
